The 53rd winner of the 2000 Guineas, held on Tuesday 30th April 1861 over the Rowley Mile, was Diophantus (25/1), a chestnut colt by Orlando out of Equation, owned by the 7th Earl of Stamford. The winner won by 3 lengths in 1 minute 43 secs, with just a short head between second and third. A field of 16 runners contested the race which was worth £3,300 (Equivalent to £369,600 in 2017)
